What is it?
The Zettelkasten method, also known as the "slip-box" method, is a personal knowledge management and note-taking system developed by German sociologist Niklas Luhmann.
The Purpose
It is designed to help individuals organize and connect their ideas and information in a way that promotes creativity and insight.
The Method
The method involves creating and linking small, discrete notes (or "zettels") in a way that mirrors how thoughts and ideas naturally connect in the mind.
Here’s a breakdown of the key components of the Zettelkasten method:
- Atomic Notes: Each note should contain a single idea or piece of information. This ensures that notes are concise and easy to connect with other notes.
- Unique IDs: Each note is assigned a unique identifier. This could be a sequential number, a combination of letters and numbers, or a date-time stamp. The ID helps to uniquely reference and link notes.
- Links and Connections: Notes are linked to one another through references or IDs. This creates a web of interconnected ideas, allowing for easy retrieval and the discovery of new relationships between concepts.
- Index or Structure Notes: Some notes may serve as index or structure notes that categorize and link to other notes on a particular topic, providing an overview and helping to navigate the network of notes.
- Context and Metadata: Additional information, such as the source of the idea, keywords, or related topics, can be added to each note to provide context and make the notes more useful.
- Growth and Evolution: The Zettelkasten is a dynamic system that grows and evolves over time. New notes are continuously added, and connections between notes are updated as new relationships are discovered.
